Hardwood Floor FAQ: Questions answered by hardwood flooring experts

Q. Why hardwood floors?
A. Hardwood floors are not only more beautiful than carpet, they are
easier to clean, hypoallergenic, and a better investment for your home
in the long run as they can be refinished up to 4-5 times before
needing to be replaced.

Q. How long does it typically take to refinish a hardwood floor?
A. An average size floor typically takes 3-5 days to refinish from
start to finish.

Q. What is a swedish finish?
A. A swedish finish is an oil/alcohol based floor finish. While a
swedish finish does have very strong fumes, it is more durable than a
water-based finish. It tends to give most species of floors an
amber like color. FMLLC uses Glitsa Swedish Finish. The most widely
used and trusted floor finish in the industry.

Q. My floors are very yellow and very scratched up, will a refinish
take all that out?

A. Yes. Refinishing a hardwood floor makes it brand new all over
again, restoring it back to life. It takes out all the dents,
scratches and discoloration that over time, become normal
characteristic's of every hardwood floor.

Q. I just had my floors refinished about 2 years ago, can I just put a
new coat of finish on them without completely refinishing them again?

A. Yes. A screen and coat will make your floor shine again like it did
when it was last refinished. Doing this will buff out most surface
scratches and will put off the need for your next refinish even
longer. A screen and coat can be done in one day. Most floors are
refinished every 8-12 years or so.

Q. What's the deal with prefinished hardwood floors?
A. Prefinished floors are solid plank hardwoods, usually 5/8" or 3/4"
thick. They all have a v-groove, or micro-bevel that after installed,
outlines every plank. They come factory finished out of the box and
only need to be installed. You don't have to exit the premises with
prefinished hardwoods. There are no fumes involved. Also
they offer unique, or custom stains and finish's, such as hand scraped or
distressed hardwoods, which can't be offered from a site finished
floor under normal time and budget constraints.

Q. What's up with engineered hardwood flooring?
A. Engineered hardwoods are prefinished floors that typically consist
of layers of plywood, except for the top 1/8" or so being actual
hardwood. They are typically used over a concrete subfloor, by either
gluing straight to the subfloor or by gluing only the tongue and
groove over a rubber or foam underlayment in what is called a floating
floor. They are structured to be less susceptible to moisture
problems, found in concrete applications. They are also limited as far
as whether they can be refinished and how many times.

Q. Will my toilet need to be taken out in order to refinish my hardwood floors?
A. Yes. If there is hardwood installed underneath or around the
toilet. Don't worry, this is included in FMLLC's refinishing process.

Q. How dusty is the refinishing process?
A. Floor Mechanics LLC utilizes todays top of the line sanding
equipment to minimalize dust. We also hang plastic in all areas
without hardwood to seal off the work area. We clean up most of the
small amount of dust created, but some light cleaning should be
expected when we are finished.

Q. I want to extend hardwood into my dining room. Can you blend into
my existing floor and make it match?

A. We sure can! Once the new floor is installed and weaved into the
existing floor, we sand the entire thing. When complete, you can't
tell the dining room was added. Another great feature of hardwood
floors!

Q. I want to replace the base boards in my house at the same time my
floors are getting refinished. Can FMLLC do this for me as well?

A. Floor Mechanics LLC are not only experts in hardwood installation
and refinishing, but we can also handle any finish carpentry needs you
